The next console generation will begin in five years, according to Microsoft, as it swears it’ll put Call Of Duty games on PS6.

Considering the current generation of consoles had something of a slow start, due to launching in the middle of a global pandemic, it’s easy to forget that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are already nearly three years old.

Since they launched seven years after their predecessors, it’s easy to assume that the PlayStation 6 and the Xbox Series X2 (or whatever stupid name Microsoft gives it) will be out in around four to five years.

Microsoft certainly thinks that’s the case, as it’s claimed the ‘expected starting period’ for the next console generation is in 2028.

This is just one of several statements to come out of the ongoing legal battle between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission, who are fighting over whether the former’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard should be allowed or not.

Microsoft said more or less the same thing to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority last November, with the often reliable Tom Henderson alleging this past March that Sony won’t launch the PlayStation 6 till 2028 at the earliest.

Microsoft only brings this up, though, in relation to its pledge to keep releasing Call Of Duty games on PlayStation for the next 10 years if it acquires Activision.

‘This term would in any case go beyond the expected starting period of the next generation of consoles (in 2028),’ says Microsoft, via IGN.

‘Thus, Call Of Duty will be published on successor PlayStation consoles should one be released during the term of the agreement.’

This is meant to counter Sony’s old claim of losing access to Call Of Duty by 2027, although Microsoft continues to overlook the fact that its 10 year commitment still has an expiry date.

Sony has refused to agree to the arrangement but if it did, there’s nothing to stop Microsoft from not renewing it once those 10 years are up.

Sony has also cited the PlayStation 6 as a reason why the deal should be blocked, saying it would have to keep details about the console private from Activision Blizzard.

This is because any such info could easily make its way back to Microsoft, if it owns Activision Blizzard, thus allowing it to plan around Sony’s console strategy.

Seriously, what stupid name does Microsoft have planned for its next console? The Xbox Series Y? Xbox Hyper Edition? Super Xbox Turbo? (Picture: Microsoft)
