The Pretenders leave Glastonbury fans in awe as surprise set packed with celebrity guests – from Dave Grohl to Sir Paul McCartney-Emily Bashforth-Entertainment – Metro

The Pretenders left fans well and truly in awe as they rocked up to the Park Stage at Glastonbury for a surprise set.

And in true Glasto style, they had some treats up their sleeves – in the form of Johnny Marr and Dave Grohl!

Their slot was confirmed on Tuesday after a rather awkward livestream blunder appeared to give the game away too early.

But that didn’t stop anyone from loving them, as the rockers opened with a new track, titled Losing My Sense Of Taste, for their Saturday evening slot at the world-famous festival.

Greeting the crowd after the first song, lead singer Chrissie Hynde said: ‘Thank you, I feel like I know everyone here – let’s do it.’

The group then promised that they would be bringing some friends to Worthy Farm during the set – and oh, they delivered!

After The Pretenders slashed through guitar riffs on Time The Avenger, Hynde, 71, said: ‘Oh Glastonbury, how many memories, how many past loves, how many past lives.’

The group continued to rile up the crowd during Middle Of The Road, with Hynde whipping out the harmonica to close the song.

The singer then delivered a poignant moment as she slowed down the tempo to sing Hymn To Her, getting the masses of fans to sing back the chorus to them.

Finishing the song, she said: ‘That was for Meg Keene (Hynde’s friend who wrote the track).’

The Pretenders then got everyone roaring as they brought out The Smiths star Marr as a surprise guest, who had a spell in the rock band in the late 1980s.

Ahead of introducing him, Hynde said: ‘Glastonbury has so many memories but my favourite is seeing my guitar heroes.’

She noted that their guitarist James Walbourne was one and Marr was another.

Marr joined them for a rendition of hits Back On the Chain Gang and Don’t Get Me Wrong.

But the excitement didn’t end there, as The Pretenders shocked the Glastonbury crowd further as they brought the Foo Fighters’ Grohl on to help close their set.

This marked the former Nirvana drummer’s second set after taking to the Pyramid stage on Friday for a surprise set with his own bandmates.

Ahead of his reveal, Hynde told the crowd: ‘Apparently there’s a drummer kicking around backstage’, with the crowd erupting into cheers when his name was announced.
