Band The Joy have been forced to pull out of their scheduled performance at Glastonbury Music Festival 2023 on Sunday, it’s been announced.

In a statement released by the festival on Twitter, the update read: ‘Unfortunately, The Joy have been forced to cancel their 11am performance at the Other Stage.

‘They will be replaced by Mother Sky.’

The Joy, who hail from South Africa, had several performances scheduled throughout this year’s Glastonbury.

Their first performance was on Friday at The Rabbit Hole Stage, followed by the Genosys Sound System Stage on the same day.

They were then meant to perform at 11am on Sunday on The Other Stage, ahead of appearances at festivals in July including Love Supreme Festival, Soho House Festival and Somerset House.

The band explained on their Instagram Story why they had to drop out of their performance.

‘Hello everyone, this is The Joy. We wanted to let you know that we’re very disappointed that we had to cancel our show today,’ they said, outlining that one of their members’ voices was suffering.

‘He’s not well, but he’s recovering. And we’ll be playing on the BBC today afternoon. Yeah, that’s it.’

A representative for the band told Metro.co.uk: ‘Unfortunately the lead vocalist of the group Sanele Hlope lost his voice due to viral tonsillitis.

‘We took him to hospital yesterday and is now on a course of antibiotics but definitely not in position to lead a 60min set.

‘They will still be attending their BBC TV and radio recordings with the performance of one song where he is not leading.

‘We are all very disappointed and sad about this cancellation and also grateful to the festival for their understanding and support on such short notice.’
