Sir Elton John raised the roof during his Glastonbury 2023 performance, with the crowds at the festival raking in thousands.

Millions more were also watching at home, with viewing figures skyrocketing to a reported 7million to watch the Rocketman and his special guests in what could be a new record, it’s been reported.

According to Barb data from overnights.tv, the 76-year-old’s three-hour spectacle attrated a near-50% audience show, becoming one of the most-watched programmes of the years so far, Deadline reported.

The publication claimed that early estimates calculated that Sir Elton’s show was likely the most-watched at Glastonbury of all time, surpassing Dolly Parton’s 2014 performance by more than 100,000.

Last year, the BBC announced record-breaking figures for the festival, which boasted Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney as one of the 2022 headliners.

The broadcaster shared at the time: ‘Sir Paul McCartney’s Glastonbury performance on BBC One had a peak audience of 3.9m and an average audience of 2.7m and Diana Ross’ performance on BBC One had a peak audience of 3.8m and an average audience of 3.1m.’

Therefore, if Sir Elton did attract 7m, as has been reported, it would have beaten last year’s ratings by a huge margin.

What’s more, other headliners from Glastonbury 2023 were said to have drawn in far fewer viewers.

The publication reported that the Guns N’ Roses, who performed on Saturday night, brought just over 1m viewers, while the Arctic Monkeys, the headliners who took to the stage on Friday night, accumulated 1.5m.

Numerous people were left in awe by Sir Elton’s set, which saw him perform some of his most celebrated tunes from his repertoire, including Your Song, Tiny Dancer, Rocketman and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

‘Killer song after killer song. Most of us artists can only dream of having a catalogue like this. What a SET. The legacy Elton leaves us is immeasurable,’ West End star Beverley Knight tweeted.

Comedian Jon Harvey wrote: ‘It’s only thanks to #Glastonbury that the nation gets to see a full live set by one of pop’s greatest legends on BBC One in primetime. In an era of fractured entertainment and second screens, there’s something cool about the idea of everyone enjoying a gig together.’

Writer Jason Reid added: ‘When you’re 76, doing a 2 hour set of hit after hit at Glastonbury, paying tribute to a fellow icon George Michael… and teens in the crowd are lapping up every song and singing every word.

‘It doesn’t get much better than Elton John. What a special night!
