A FASHION whizz and etiquette expert has revealed the eight things you must ditch this summer if you want to look elegant.

So if you’ve got a holiday planned or are thinking about heading to the shops to pick up some new summer items, then you’ll need to listen up quickly.

According to Antonia Higham, not only is it certain clothing and shoes that make you look tacky, but your nails, jewellery and sunglasses can play a big part in this too.

Taking to TikTok, the fashionista shared her recent clip with the caption ‘Things that elegant ladies never wear in summer.’ 

First of all, if you’re a fan of Crocs, according to this fashion pro, these have got to go.

Not only this, but when it comes to your swimwear, she claimed that “tacky bikinis”, such as those that are revealing and have strappy detailing, will also make you look tacky.

As well as this, bucket hats also made the list of tacky summer items, as Antonia instead advised those wanting to look elegant to opt for a straw hat.

When it comes to footwear, jelly shoes were also considered tacky by Antonia, so if you’ve got a pair you’ve had since the early 2000s, you might want to have a re-think before packing your case this summer.

Where jewellery is concerned, according to Antonia, “novelty jewellery” such as shell necklaces and anklets will also make you look tacky.

If you are booking a trip to salon for your pre-holiday beauty prep, Antonia advised against “tacky nails”, as she shared an image of long, colourful, pointed nails.

Another footwear option that Antonia isn’t a fan of – prepare to be attacked – Birkenstocks.

And finally, according to Antonia, this summer, if you want to look elegant, you’ll need to avoid “obnoxiously tacky sunglasses”. 

Antonia’s clip has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 73,700 views.

It has 3,552 likes, 75 comments, 242 saves and 17 shares.

But social media users were quick to race to the comments, to disagree with her claims that Birkenstocks are tacky.

One person said: “I really want to make the transition into elegance, but I don’t think I can break up with my Birkenstocks.”

Another added: “I disagree. Birks are a classic staple. Especially the gold arizonas- gives a bougie vibe.”

A third commented: “Love my Birks!! I’m out!!”

Whilst someone else chimed in: “Never giving up my Birkenstocks. Finally have them broken in just right.”

At the same time, another user noted: “Everything can be elegant when you know how to style it.”

Antonia later added: “Do what makes you happy.”
