Tom Allen is going to be handed the responsibility of arranging the dream wedding of a gay couple.

The comedian and broadcaster, 40, won the So You Think You’re Funny contest back in 2005, and has since gone on to appear in shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Big Brother’s Big Mouth and Ready or Not, whilst also hosting Bake Off: The Professionals The Apprentice: You’re Fired!.

Now he is going to be fronting a reality series in which he becomes a wedding planner.

The BBC show My Big Gay Wedding will see Tom have to decide between details ranging from clothes and cutlery to flowers and food.

Set to air next year, the programme celebrates the 10th anniversary of legislation legalising same-sex marriage coming into force in England and Wales.

While it may be an ambitious ask, Tom believes he’s up for the challenge.

‘The fact that same-sex couples couldn’t get married here just 10 years ago means we should never be complacent about the progress we’ve made and so it’s only right to celebrate it thoroughly,’ he said.

‘I’m looking forward to making this joyous celebration of love and gay marriage, or garriage as I like to call it.’

The 60-minute special will also explore how equal marriage was achieved along with showing Tom meeting LGBT+ campaigners.

He will also introduce the chosen couple to some of his celebrity friends who will help with the entertainment, outfits and other wedding plans.

The programme will end on the wedding day in a ‘joyous celebration of love, community and hard-won equality’.

BBC head of religion and ethics Daisy Scalchi said ‘celebrating this momentous anniversary with a couple at such an important time in their lives is a privilege’.

‘Tom is the perfect person to guide them towards their dream day, while reflecting on how we’ve got to now and what that means to so many.’

For those not ready to wait for a celebration, London’s annual Pride Parade is set to return this weekend marking 51 years since the capital held its first march for the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride Month in the capital is celebrated with many events championing LGBTQ+ rights and issues, with the annual parade one of the highlights.

More than one million people hit the streets last year, with large numbers expected again this time around.

My Big Gay Wedding will air on BBC in 2024.
