Ubisoft veteran Emile Morel has died at the age of just 40, according to announcements made by colleagues on LinkedIn.

Developers working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 have announced the death of the game’s creative director, Emile Morel.

Morel has been at Ubisoft since 2009 and was previously the senior game designer for Rayman Legends. He was originally associate creative director on Beyond Good & Evil 2, before taking over as lead creative director, following the exit of Jean-Marc Geffroy – and before him series creator Michel Ancel.

‘A cherished colleague for over a decade at Ubisoft Montpellier, we laughed and wept through good times and bad, and shipped a lot [of] great games together,’ wrote Gabrielle Shrager. ‘Emile was so very proud of Beyond Good and Evil 2, the Space Monkeys and his teammates. He will be sorely missed.’

There is no indication of how Morel died, but Greg Hermittant adds that, ‘Even through the most difficult times, you always remained the caring and supportive person you were with your beautiful positive mind.’

‘You will miss Beyond Good & Evil. Be assured we will continue your work,’ he adds.

Before Ubisoft, Morel had previously worked at French studio Eden Games, on the 2008 Alone In The Dark reboot and Test Drive Unlimited 2.

More: Trending

Ubisoft has not yet commented on his death, or the future of Beyond Good & Evil 2, which despite being in development, off and on, for over a decade has never seemed close to release.

There are occasional updates on its progress though, confirming that it has not been cancelled, and as you can see, the team are keen to continue the work, despite the loss of Morel.
