Cary Elwes has declared it ‘a dream come true’ to join the Mission: Impossible franchise alongside Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and more, for its latest instalment – Dead Reckoning Part One.

The 60-year-old, who has enjoyed a long and varied career in films like Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Hot Shots!, the Saw series and – of course – The Princess Bride, was also delighted to work alongside star and producer Tom Cruise once more, after over 30 years.

Elwes is debuting in his role of Denlinger in the Mission: Impossible series alongside Hayley Atwell, Guardians of the Galaxy alumna Pom Klementieff and new villain Esai Morales.

Reflecting on his experience making the movie, written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Elwes said it had ‘been a ride’.

‘I’ve been always wanted to be a part of this franchise, I was a fan of the TV series, and obviously a fan of the franchise, and so it’s a dream come true for me,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

‘This is my second picture with Tom. We did Days of Thunder a little over 30 years ago. And he’s the same guy today as he was then – I mean, he’s just an incredible human being. He’s obviously a great actor, he’s an insane stunt man and is a wonderful producer.’

‘He’s just always lifting people up, he’s always very supportive of the people he works with. He’s always been that way, and it’s always a joy to get to work with him,’ praised Elwes.

Days of Thunder saw Cruise as a young race car driver eager to make a name for himself in NASCAR, with Elwes as his teammate and bitter rival.

It was also one of three movies that Cruise and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman starred in together, alongside Far and Away and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.

When it comes to his role in Dead Reckoning Part One, Elwes is also on his own mission to keep any specifics at all under wraps until audiences have had the chance to watch the film.

‘We can’t go into any detail! I’m sworn to secrecy – we just don’t want to spoil it for the fans. You know, they’re in for a great ride and so we just want to keep it a surprise for them,’ he shared.

However, he did indeed jokingly confirm that he is ‘actually in the film’.

Discussing the Covid-related delays to the shoot and release of the movie, with Mission: Impossible famously being one of the first filmsets back up and running during the pandemic, the star added: ‘It took a while, but all good things take time. So yes, we’re very thrilled.’

Although Elwes made a name for himself in the 1980s with films including Another Country and Lady Jane before his breakout in The Princess Bride, he has also starred more recently in some of the biggest TV shows going, including Stranger Things and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

Can he even pick a favourite role or project form his extensive career credits?

‘I don’t know… Well, obviously Princess Bride is one that that will always resonate with people, so I’m very blessed with that.

‘But this one for me was, like I said, a dream come true because this movie is so high octane. It’s such an insanely powerful action film – I think it’s the greatest action movie ever. But people say, “Cary, you’re in it, you’re biased!”, but honestly, it’s so exciting. I’m really, really excited for the fans to see it.’

Finally, the English-born actor and writer has a name that is sure to have tripped up a few people over the years – has he ever heard a particularly unusual way of pronouncing his surname?

‘Elvis. Sometimes I get that in the airport when they’re paging me. But that’s cool – I mean, at least it’s that guy.’

Well, quite.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits UK cinemas on Monday, July 10.
