Call The Midwife star Stephen McGann is said to be providing support to his co-stars Helen George and Jack Ashton after their break-up.

Last week, the couple announced that they had separated after seven years of marriage.

In a statement, Helen, 39, confirmed that she and Jack, 36, had gone their separate ways.

‘Some months ago, we separated,’ she said.

Speaking to The Mirror, the actress continued: ‘Our two beautiful girls remain the focus and I respectfully ask for privacy for this next chapter.’

Stephen, 60, has starred on the BBC series since 2012 as Dr Patrick Turner, a GP in Poplar who works closely with the midwives.

According to The Daily Mail, he has been offering comfort to Helen and Jack in the aftermath of their split.

‘We’re all like a family. Helen is fine, I love Helen and Jack,’ he said, according to the publication.

A source reportedly said of the actors’ separation: ‘Helen and Jack’s decision to end their relationship has been amicable, and no one else is involved, they have just grown apart as a couple.

‘They are both incredibly committed to working together to be the best parents they can for their two daughters.’

Helen and Jack – who play Trixie Franklin and Rev Tom Hereward respectively on Call The Midwife – welcomed their first daughter, Wren Ivy, in September 2017 and their second daughter, Lark, in November 2021.

The actress opened up about her relationship with her husband in 2021, saying that they were ‘like-minded people who understand the industry, the career and the long hours’.

Helen has previously starred in productions including Hollyoaks, Nativity Rocks! and Red Dwarf, and she finished in sixth place on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.

Among his roles, Jack has appeared in Waterloo Road, Casualty and Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Helen and Jack shared an on-screen relationship on Call The Midwife, with Tom proposing to Trixie before she called off their engagement.

Romance blossomed between the pair when they were filming the 2016 Christmas special of the programme in South Africa.
