BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood has admitted her relationship blossomed when she was least expecting it.

The weather presenter, 61, is engaged to Steve Randall, 48, who popped the question in May last year.

They’ve been dating since 2021, with Steve then proposing while on holiday.

While Carol keeps much of her personal life private, she has opened up about her husband-to-be in a new interview, sweetly describing him as ‘perfect’.

She also said she’s feeling ‘happy and healthy’ after the former police officer got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

Speaking to Closer, she explained how they got together.

‘We were friends before we became romantically involved so we knew each other quite well before we started dating,’ Carol shared.

‘That was nice because it just kind of happened.

‘Neither of us were looking for romance and there it was, it just evolves. It’s so lovely.’

She added lovingly: ‘Who’d have thought that at this ripe old age, I’d be getting married again? I certainly didn’t.’

Carol is also excited about having ‘so much to look forward to in the next 20 years’.

‘My fiancé is very handsome,’ she said.

‘He’s very kind and caring and he makes me laugh.’

She also reckons Steve is a good cook, describing him as ‘all I could ever want.’

‘In my eyes he’s perfect.’

Is someone chopping onions in here?

Steve will be Carol’s second husband.

The TV star – who joined BBC Breakfast in 1998 – was previously married to Jimmy Kirkwood, a former field hockey and cricket player from Northern Ireland.

Carol and Jimmy married in 1990 and were married for 18 years before splitting in 2008.

After becoming single again, Carol spoke about her marriage coming to an end while appearing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.

‘I was married for a long time and I got married quite young so it’s nice doing things I have the freedom to do now,’ the Scottish star told The Sun.

‘If I want to go out to the theatre or go out with friends for dinner, I’ve got that freedom.’
