Barbie producers announced their plans to launch a Mattel franchise to rival the rest of them and promised to bring more nostalgic toys to life on the big screen.

Following the success of the Greta Gerwig pink extravaganza starring Margot Robbie, the company shared the news a ‘Mattel cinematic universe’ was on the way, featuring some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers.

As well as brand new tales, the production company also hinted at potential Barbie sequels and the return of the blonde doll for more adventures.

Mattel’s new CEO Ynon Kreiz opened up to Variety about the film’s future and said: ‘Barbie, as a brand, has many different iterations.

‘The product lines of Barbie is a very broad brand. In addition to the main Barbie figure, she has family, she has a lot of elements around in her universe.

‘It’s a very rich universe… It’s a very broad and very elastic brand, in terms of opportunities.

‘At the outset, we’re not saying, “Okay, let’s think already about movie two and three.

“Let’s get the first one right and make that a success”. And if you do that, opportunities open up very quickly, once you establish the first movie as a successful representation of a franchise on the big screen.’

In addition to another go at evoking further Barbie fever, the business promised a remake of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots starring the Fast & Furious actor Vin Diesel.

The A-lister is said to be leading the upcoming feature film that will be based on the toy brand’s tabletop game of duelling robots.

Oscar-nominated producer Robbie Brenner shared: ‘Vin is excited. We’re working on developing a script and we’re all very excited about it.’

He also touched on the possibility of Tom Hanks lending himself to a Major Matt Mason movie and concluded that he would star as the 1960s Mattel astronaut action figure who works and lives on the moon.

The news came after leading actress Margot opened up about the true meaning of the Mattel movie.

She said the highly anticipated Barbie movie was a celebration of ‘the real life Barbie’ – director Greta.

The Australian actress, who stars alongside Ryan Gosling as the titular character in the film, gushed over the director and explained she was ‘everything’ and ‘can do anything’.

The film followed Margot and Ryan’s Barbie and Ken as they leave Barbie Land and travel to the real world.
