A new Castlevania series is imminent on Netflix but apparently that’s not the end of their video game anime plans.

Although it’s one of the most influential video game series of the modern era there’s a good chance that the Dark Souls series is dead. There hasn’t been a new entry since 2016 and given spiritual successor Elden Ring has been even more successful there seems little reason to expect a new Dark Souls anytime soon.

However, the secret sauce behind Netflix’s animated video game projects seems to be that they’re based on a dormant franchise and since Castlevania has been a huge success, despite there not having been a new game in almost a decade, that’s unlikely to stop them latching onto Dark Souls.

That still doesn’t really explain why they’d wouldn’t rather adapt Elden Ring, but according to the latest rumours it’s Dark Souls which has been given the greenlight.

The obvious problem with adapting Dark Souls is that the storyline is extremely abstruse and almost all of it is left open to interpretation, with background lore primarily based on item descriptions and in-game characters that can never be entirely trusted.

There has been a series of Dark Souls comic books though, so clearly the franchise can work in other media, although whether the Netflix show will try to be confusing on purpose remains to be seen.

The news comes via website Giant Freakin Robot, which while usually very accurate in terms of other TV leaks doesn’t add any further details.

It’s not even clear exactly what they mean by anime, and whether they’re just using that as a generic term for animation in general or if the show is being made by a Japanese studio.

As for Castlevania, the new series is called Castlevania: Nocturne, and will be coming to Netflix on September 28.

Little is known about it, other than it’s set during the French Revolution (so late 18th century) and stars Maria Renard and Richter Belmont.

Both characters first featured in 1993’s Rondo Of Blood, although Richter is perhaps best known for his role in the intro to Symphony Of The Night… and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
