Sinéad O’Connor’s rendition of the Outlander theme song The Skye Boat Song has been remembered and showered with love after her death aged 56.

The singer’s death was confirmed on Wednesday by her family, after she was found ‘unresponsive’ at a house in London hours earlier.

Tributes have been shared from fans and those in the music world alike, as well as broadcasters including Piers Morgan, and Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who wrote: ‘Her music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare.’

Outlander stars and fans have also paid tribute, after O’Connor was chosen to sing the iconic theme song for its seventh and penultimate season.

After the news of her tragic death, Claire Fraser actress Caitriona Balfe wrote: ‘I hope you are at peace … and with your baby boy. Thank you for sharing your soul with us and soothing us with your incredible voice beautiful Sinéad.’

The official Outlander page added: ‘Thank you for lending us your iconic voice, Sinead O’Connor.’

Executive producer Maril Davis wrote on Twitter: ‘On behalf of the entire cast and crew of Outlander we are deeply saddened about the news of Sinead’s passing.

‘She was an incredible talent and working with her on this season’s main title song was a true honor.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.’

Showrunner Matthew B Roberts wrote on Instagram: ‘I’m deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Sinead O’Connor.

‘Her distinct voice and brave spirit transformed not only the music scene but also left a deep impact on social issues.

‘She will be remembered for her outstanding contribution to music and her remarkable courage.

‘My deepest condolences to her family, friends, and fans across the globe. May her soul rest in peace and her legacy continue to inspire.’

Earlier this year, Roberts had announced O’Connor’s input in the show, writing: ‘We are honoured to have Sinéad O’Connor performing The Skye Boat Song. Her rendition is, for me, a reminder of all that’s beautiful about Outlander.

‘She is talented beyond measure. Hers is a voice of the ages – one which pierces heart and soul – and embodies the spirit of the show.’

Fans have also paid tribute, with one writing: ‘Sinead’s voice is so epic and now so very haunting here. So glad #Outlander asked her to do this.’

Author Tara Bennett added: ‘She lived a very hard life and because of it, you could always tell that she poured her whole soul into each of her songs. Sinéad O’Connor’s rendition of #Outlander’s The Skye Boat Song brings me to tears every time I hear it. RIP.’

‘Sinead’s distinctive voice gave so much to this season’s Outlander theme, the Skye Boat song,’ someone else said.

Outlander is available to stream on Starz in the US and on Lionsgate+ in the UK.
