There are rumblings of the first two Baldur’s Gate games coming to Xbox Game Pass, to make up for the lack of Baldur’s Gate 3.

While PlayStation 5 owners only need to wait an extra month for Baldur’s Gate 3 – one of, if not the, biggest role-playing game of the year – Xbox owners aren’t so lucky.

Thanks to technical difficulties with porting the game to Xbox Series S, it’s very likely that a dedicated Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be out until 2024.

Perhaps to compensate for this, Microsoft is believed to be adding the first two Baldur’s Gate games to its Game Pass service.

At the time of writing, no formal announcement has been made, but some Xbox owners across social media, including Twitter and Reddit, have reportedly received notifications from Microsoft saying that the two games ‘have been let loose’ on Game Pass.

What’s likely happened here is that the message was sent out prematurely. With Baldur’s Gate 3 launching for PC on Thursday, August 3, Microsoft seems likely to publicly confirm the first two games for Game Pass within the next 24 hours.

The real question we must ask, though, is which versions of Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 are Microsoft planning to add. We suspect that rather than the original PC versions from the late 90s, it will actually be their more modern Enhanced Editions.

The original two Baldur’s Gate titles were first released in the late 90s and only for PC. They were developed by Mass Effec and Dragon Age (which was originally conceived as a spiritual sequel) creator BioWare, as one of its first ever games.

Console versions only arrived as recently as 2019, for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. These Enhanced Editions were created by Overhaul Games and not BioWare themselves.

It’s possible the original versions may also be released for PC Game Pass but that’s why we need an official annoucement.

Ahead of its launch, Larian has also advised anyone who has been playing the early access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 to delete their save files and uninstall it completely.

You can’t transfer your saves to the full game anyway, but Larian says this is to ‘reduce the risk of file conflicts’ and prevent any weird technical hiccups from occuring.
