A nasty bug is preventing Baldur’s Gate 3 players from saving, losing hours of progress for some of them.

Although there are no complete reviews for Baldur’s Gate 3 yet (since review copies were only sent out four days before launch), the game is clearly succeeding on positive word of mouth alone.

It’s proved popular enough to utterly break Steam for some people and had more than 400,000 players at once within its first 24 hours.

No game is flawless, though, and some unlucky players have encountered a nasty technical issue that prevents you from saving, resulting in people losing hours of progress.

Precisely what is causing it isn’t entirely clear, but fortunately developer Larian Studios has already responded to the complaints and offered a troubleshooting guide to bypass the issue.

The first thing it recommends is shutting down all non-essential programs before booting the game up, including anti-virus software, since there have been reports of Bitdefender stopping Baldur’s Gate 3 from creating files.

It also suggests disabling cloud support. In fact, a handful of people have already confirmed that turning off cross-saving worked for them.

Presumably, Larian is working behind the scenes to properly fix this issue, as well as any other bugs that players may have come across. One Reddit thread is keeping track of the launch day issues, which also lists some sounds being too quiet and crashes during certain parts of the game.

Some players are understandably annoyed to have lost so much progress thanks to the bug and others have expressed concerns about the PlayStation 5 version not being properly optimised.

However, it doesn’t seem to have diluted the hype surrounding Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch. In fact, some comments on Twitter, alerting Larian of other issues, still congratulate the studio on the game’s launch.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC. A PlayStation 5 version launches on September 6. An Xbox Series X/S version is in development.
