Mark Margolis has died at the age of 83.

The actor, best known for his roles as Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York on August 3, surrounded by his family.

His rep confirmed the sad news to Metro.co.uk, explaining that he suffered a ‘short illness’.

Details are unclear over the late star’s official cause of death.

‘He was one of a kind. We won’t see his likes again,’ manager Robert Kolker said in a statement.

‘He was a treasured client and a lifelong friend. I was lucky to know him.’

Philadelphia-born Margolis found his passion for acting as a teenager, and eventually made the move to New York to study at the Actors Studio.

He eventually made his screen debut in The Opening of Misty Beethoven, in 1976, before landing other small roles in Christmas Evil and Eddie Macon’s Run.

In 1983, he shot to stardom thanks to his infamous turn as Alberto the Shadow in Scarface, sharing the screen with Al Pacino.

Despite leaving film fans impressed, Margolis explained that he was forced to turn his back on Hollywood shortly after – due to low funds.

‘I am just a journeyman actor,’ he said, via the Hollywood Reporter.

‘Truth to tell, six months after Scarface, I had to take a job with a real estate development friend for a few months just to get by.’

On his return to acting, he was cast in a string of big screen projects including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994, Gone Baby Gone, Black Swan and Hannibal.

His most infamous part came in 2009 as Hector Salamanca in gritty drama Breaking Bad, alongside Aaron Paul, Bryan Cranston and Bob Odenkirk.

He only appeared in eight episodes as the head of the family drug organization, but went on to reprise the role in spin-off series Better Call Saul.
