Suzy Eddie Izzard has announced she is launching a campaign to be elected as an MP for Brighton.

The comedian, who is trans, is hoping to enter Westminster politics after missing out at becoming a candidate for Labour in Sheffield Central.

Now the 61-year-old is aiming to stand for Labour in Brighton Pavilion, a seat currently held by Caroline Lucas, the only Green Party MP, who has held the seat since 2010.

Lucas is standing down at the next election, with Suzy announcing on Friday that she hopes to take her spot.

She praised Brighton as a ‘forefront of change’ in a campaign video announcing her entering the race, saying she wanted to ‘help it continue to make that change.’

The star went on to say she wanted to ‘support this brilliant city, and its diverse and vibrant community.’

‘I grew up in this county, and I’m proud of my roots,’ she said, adding: ‘Whilst the Tories stoke fear and encourage culture wars, Brighton has shown the country another way.

‘Open-minded and welcoming to all, with a thriving arts, creative and cultural scene, imaginative, energetic and full of entrepreneurial spirit, but for 13 years the Toris have tried to drag us down.’

She also took aim at the Green council for the city, and said it would take ‘practical action, not protest, to fix what’s broken.’

Suzy, who announced this year she was also going by the new name as well as Eddie, and is happy using all pronouns, previously said she would ‘ush and push’ until she became an MP.

Appearing on Lorraine in March, she said: ‘I’m going into politics, I’m going to push and push and push until I become an MP.

I’m just going to carry on, because coming out was truthful.

‘I was telling the truth about 38 years ago when I said this is me, and this is what’s inside me.

‘It’s difficult to be a politician and live a good and positive life, I’ve tried, if people track back through my life, I’ve tried to be good and positive.’

The comedian was unsuccessful in her Sheffield Central campaign, losing out to local councillor Abtisam Mohomad after a vote from local members.

PA reports that Labour’s selection process for Brighton Pavilion has not started and applications have not yet opened.

The next general election is widely expected to be held in autumn next year.
