Harry Styles purchased Joe Lycett’s painting of him in hilarious deal

Harry Styles has been immortalised by renowned British artist David Hockney and also by Joe Lycett in a flattering portrait which he purchased for £6.

The comedian painted a spoof version of Harry’s portrait by the 86-year-old artist, which is set to be part of a collection at the National Portrait Gallery.

This isn’t the first time Joe has painted a fellow celeb, with his portrait of Gary Lineker on sale for £1,300,000.

Joe, 35, shared the painting with a long caption claiming the Watermelon Suger singer had come to his ‘holiday home in padstow’ for two days to sit for the painting.

Fans claimed the image looked ‘more like Alan Carr’ but Harry, 29, was so impressed by the likeness that he contacted Joe to buy the portrait.

The pair haggled back and forth in the screenshots shared by Joe, with the artist eventually agreeing to a sale of the ‘masterpiece’.

‘Long story short I just organised a £6 BACS transfer with Harry Styles,’ wrote the Birmingham born comedian on his Instagram.

‘I think it’s incredible important that I purchase this portrait from you. If you’d ever consider parting with this masterpiece I’d like to hang it in my home immediately,’ messaged Harry.

Joe responded: ‘I’ll give it to you for £8.’

He then apologised that there was no curry left, referencing his joke about a ‘goat massaman curry’ in the original post, which he said Harry did not eat.

Despite claiming ‘his management were quite cross’, clearly the As It Was singer loves the portrait as he offered £6 for it.

‘£6.50 final offer,’ joked the comedian before adding: ‘Or £6 and a KitKat chunky peanut butter.’

Harry pointed out that second deal was shortchanging Joe as ‘they’re not 50p’ but accepted the counteroffer.

Joe’s painting is a spoof of one which was painted by David Hockney for his new National Portrait Gallery installation, David Hockney: Drawing from Life, which opens on November 2. 

Harry visited David at his studio in Normandy, France, on May 31, 2022, and a recently shared picture shows the pair grinning as the portrait is created.

The 29-year-old wore a red and orange striped cardigan, jeans and a pearl necklace while David painted his likeness in the artist’s distinct style.

It is one of 30 portraits being put on display, some of which are new while other artworks were briefly on display at the gallery in 2020 for 20 days, closing early due to lockdown restrictions.

Harry isn’t the only one in the collection, however, not everyone is a famous face in the intimate portrait collection.

Included is a portrait of David’s late mother, Laura Hockney, who died in 1999 and was a major supporter of her son’s art from an early age.

The exhibit features portraits of former partner Gregory Evans, fashion designer Celia Britwell, and local people from his community in France.

According to The Independent, on top of the 33 new works, the exhibition will showcase the Bradford-born artist’s pencil drawings from Paris in the early 1970s.

Sarah Howgate, senior curator of contemporary collections at the National Portrait Gallery, spoke to The Independent about the David Hockney exhibition.

‘Closing this five-star exhibition after just 20 days in 2020 was incredibly disappointing for the gallery and its many visitors,’ she said.

‘Now revitalised with over 30 new energetic and insightful painted portraits of friends and visitors to the artist’s Normandy studio, it is a real privilege to have the opportunity to collaborate with David Hockney again.’

The Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Nicholas Cullinan, added: ‘Hockney is one of the most internationally respected and renowned artists today, and to see his new portraits, made over the last couple of years and which demonstrate his constant and continuing ingenuity and creative force, is life-affirming.’
