Unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, Microsoft will let you preload Starfield later this weekwhether you’ve pre-ordered it or not.

Bethesda has been hyping up how big Starfield will be for a while, boasting over 1,000 planets to explore and promising the game will be larger than even The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

So, it came as no surprise that Starfield’s file size is a hefty 125GB. Currently, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can already pre-install the game, so they can jump into it as soon as it launches in September.

Fortunately for everybody else, it looks like a more general preload will become available in just a couple of days, on Wednesday August 9.

As a reminder, preloading is available not just for people who have pre-ordered Starfield. If you’ve yet to decide, you can still preload the game so all the necessary data is available on your Xbox should you end up buying it.

Neither Microsoft nor Bethesda have confirmed such a date, but it was recently discovered via an Amazon listing, for a bundle that includes Starfield and the new black Xbox Series S.

Since the listing is on Amazon’s American site, it reads ‘Preload after 08/09/2023.’ That can’t be September 8, though, since that’s two days after Starfield launches.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be an additional day one patch, this should hopefully mean you’re not left waiting half the day just to start playing at launch.

At the very least, it’s a relief to see Microsoft approaching Starfield’s launch this way, as opposed to Baldur’s Gate 3. Although that game is proving very popular, it offered no preload ahead of its launch last week.

Another detail Microsoft hasn’t drawn attention to is Starfield’s cross-buy and cross-save support. Basically, buying either the Xbox or PC version nets you the other for free and you can share your progress across both versions.

Starfield launches for Xbox Series X/S and PC on September 6.
