Timbaland has paid tribute to lifelong friend Magoo and admitted his death ‘hits different’.

The 51-year-old producer has taken to social media after it was revealed his friend and hip hop collaborator – whose real name was Melvin Magoo Barcliff – has died aged 50.

The pair met in 1989 when they were both teenagers, and during their formative years they were part SBI (Surrounded By Idiots), a group which also included Larry Live and Pharrell Williams.

Their debut album Welcome to Our World dropped in 1997, and included hit single Up Jumps Da Boogie.

Timbaland – real name Timothy Zachery Mosley – shared a classic clip of them performing the song live, and admitted he is heartbroken by his friend’s death.

‘This one hits different,’ he wrote alongside the video. ‘Long live Melvin aka magoo !!!💔💔💔 Tim and Magoo forever 🕊️🕊️🕊️ rest easy my king ❤️❤️❤️’

Timbaland’s followers and fellow stars replied with their own messages of support, with Sarz commenting: ‘Oh no.. I was just listening to your early works with him last night.’

‘I’m so sorry for your loss Big Boss 🙏🤍🤍,’ singer Maua Sama added, while a fan responded: ‘Very sad!!! May he rest well & prayers up to his family & those who considers him a friend.’
