GameCentral offers a quick rundown of how romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 works and simple examples of how to curry your companions’ favour.

Amid the many accolades Baldur’s Gate 3 has received since its launch, perhaps one of the most prominent is its romance options. Mostly thanks to the viral gay bear sex scene, which gives the perfect indicator for how… upfront these romances can get (it’s also one of the few games to feature full frontal nudity).

Some players are even competing to see who can trigger these sex scenes the fastest, but what if you’re a first-time player who prefers to not rush things and is unsure how to romance certain characters?

In that event, we’ve put together a simple rundown of how romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 works, which characters are available to romance, and a summation of how to capture their interest.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – which characters can you romance?

Assuming you didn’t pick one of the six pre-built origin characters and made your own original hero, Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you romance any of the 10 companion characters you can recruit to join your party.

Those characters are:

Astarion the high elf rogue

Gale the human wizard

Halsin the wood elf druid

Jaheira the high half-elf druid

Karlach the tiefling barbarian

Lae’zel the githyanki fighter

Minsc the human ranger

Minthara the drow paladin

Shadowheart the high half-elf trickster

Wyll the human warlock

It’s worth noting that there’s no limitation on who you can romance depending on your own character.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – how do you romance a character?

Since each character has their own personality, likes, and dislikes, the exact methods of romancing them is different. However, all of them generally require earning their approval.

So, throughout the adventure, you’ll want to say and do things that’ll make them like you more, which of course varies from character to character.

However, it is possible to lose approval so, unless you aren’t bothered with the romance options, you’ll want to commit to pleasing a certain companion if you intend to hook up with them.

What one companion likes may be what another hates so there’s a good possibility that winning one companion’s approval will come at the cost of another.

Each companion has an approval section on their character sheet, so you can keep track of how much they like you. There’s no numerical value, but there is a meter that moves to the right the more they like you. It moves to the left if they dislike you.

One easy way to gain approval is to regularly talk to your companions while resting at a camp, so don’t be afraid to make use of the resting feature.

The first opportunity to romance them will come during the climax of the game’s first act. Without spoiling too much, there will come a point where you must side with either the tieflings or the goblins. Picking the former will lead to a tiefling celebration at the end of Act 1.

During the celebration, you can talk to the companion of your choice and so long as their approval is high enough, you’ll unlock dialogue options that involve inviting them to a private meet-up during the night.

Siding with the goblins doesn’t lock you out of romance options entirely, but it will mean you won’t be able to trigger a romance until later in the game.

So, here’s a quick rundown on each character’s personality and the sort of things that’ll easily earn their approval:

Astarion – he’s a hedonist who enjoys cruel actions and demonstrations of power. He won’t be interested in you if you’re a goody two-shoes.

Gale – perhaps the most morally upright of your potential companions. Be as selfless and heroic as possible and you should catch his eye.

Halsin – much like Gale, just generally being a good person will earn you points with Halsin, but also be sure to express a fondness for nature and be kind to animals. You can’t actually romance him during Act 1, but as long as you rescue him from the goblin camp he’ll join your party in Act 2 and you can work towards romancing him from then.

Jaheira – you can’t recruit Jaheira till much later in the game but as a virtuous hero, you can curry favour with her by being equally heroic and avoiding being cowardly.

Karlach – while doing good deeds will help romance Karlach, don’t be afraid to approach situations with violence instead of words, as long as it’s not for villainous reasons. Not siding with goblins helps too as well as being kind to children and freeing any slaves you come across.

Lae’zal – as a fighter, Laze’zal is going to approve of any displays of power or aggression, be it for noble or villainous reasons. Approach every situation with a punch first, ask questions later attitude and she should fall for you.

Minsc – much like Jaheria, you won’t encounter Minsc until way later in the game but he’s another straightforward heroic character. So long as you’re a supportive do-gooder who defends people and loves animals, he should be simple to romance.

Minthara – she’s an interesting one since her romance requires you to side with the goblins rather than the tiefling during Act 1. In fact, doing so is almost all you need to win her affection so long as you regularly demonstrate your dedication to her as well.

Shadowheart – she’s not necessarily a heroic character, but being kind to children and animals, while also resolving conflicts without violence, are all things she’ll approve of. Also, be sure to take her side during any potential arguments with Lae’zal.

Wyll – as long as you don’t act like a villain, Wyll should be easy to romance. Fight against injustice, stand up for the weak, and share his dislike of goblins and he’ll be all over you.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC. A PlayStation 5 version launches on September 6. An Xbox Series X/S version is in development.
