After decades in the public eye, Samantha Fox is keen to dispel misunderstandings about her career.

Tonight, the pop singer competes on the latest round of Celebrity MasterChef, going up against RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Cheryl Hole, opera singer and Go Compare idol Wynne Evans, musician Locksmith and singer Jamelia.

While viewers may be surprised to discover Sam’s culinary skills when makes her debut in the kitchen on the BBC One programme, there’s another element of her life where the 57-year-old wants to set the record straight.

During a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk, Sam was asked what she feels is the biggest misconception about her.

She explained that in the UK, she is frequently referred to as an ‘ex-glamour model’… even though that aspect of her career came to an end in 1986.

‘They don’t say singer Samantha Fox and realise I sold 35million albums worldwide, so people must think what have I been doing since 86?’ she remarked.

‘I want my country to realise I had many albums out and another one on the way, and I’m very proud to say I’m still one of the very few female artists to break America, so much so I’m off again to the States for a tour in August.

‘I’m proud to be “A Great British Export”. And yes I don’t take myself too seriously.’

Sam was ‘over the moon’ to be offered the chance to go on Celebrity MasterChef, admitting that it was ‘a little out of her comfort zone’.

Recalling how she’s cooked from a ‘very young age’, she added that she’s grateful for how much she learnt from her time on the show.

Nonetheless, multitasking while balancing the cooking with speaking to the camera proved difficult for Sam, particularly with the celebrities’ every move being inspected closely by judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.

‘Suddenly you’ve watched them for so many years, and then there they are tasting your food. You don’t know what they’re thinking because it takes them a while,’ the contestant explained.

‘It’s probably quicker when you see it on the television, but it takes a while when you’re filming, and they don’t say a lot when they’re eating. They don’t talk to each other, so you don’t know what they’re thinking, and you can’t even tell by their expression on their faces.

‘They don’t give anything away. So you’re kind of hanging onto every look.’

While one might think that the kitchen would have heated up with competitive talk from the celebrities, Sam stressed that everyone was just ‘so happy to be on that show’.

‘That kind of show, it’s not about the winning. I think it’s how far you come as a person because sometimes they’ll say to you, “Well, the fact you’ve never cooked this before, wow you’ve really shone.” And, “You can tell by a couple of things we’ve told you, Sam, that you’ve learned from that,”’ she said.

‘So you feel quite proud of yourself at the end of the day when you’re getting interviewed, what you’ve actually achieved.

‘At the end of the day, I’m out of my comfort zone. Cooking is not my job and I’m not going to open a restaurant tomorrow or anything like that. I’m very creative as a person and I found that I was very creative with my cooking as well.’

Celebrity MasterChef airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
