Beyond the newest trailer, NetherRealm Studios has a few more updates for Mortal Kombat 1, including its Invasion mode.

Gamescom Opening Night Live included a new, and predictably violent, Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, that confirmed several more playable characters, but those weren’t the only revelations to be made on Tuesday night.

In fact, combined with the announcement for Star Wars: Dark Forces, there was arguably more news outside the show than during it.

Not only do we now know about a number of new, returning characters for Mortal Kombat 1 but Sony has helped to unveil an intriguing new single-player mode.

There’re still no wholly original fighters announced for Mortal Kombat 1, but long time fans will be happy to see recurring villains Shao Khan and Sindel make a return.

Although rather than the villainous couple they were before, Shao Khan is now a general serving under Sindel, while Sindel herself appears to be playing a slightly more heroic role.

Two more kameo fighters can be spotted as well in the trailer: Shujinko and Motaro, who have both been absent from the series for a long time, barring the occasional mention.

The Mortal Kombat 1 updates don’t end there though as NetherRealm Studios has since revealed information on a new gameplay mode named Invasion.

It’s a single-player experience like the main story but is described as a board game/role-playing game hybrid where you form a party of characters and move across a map, completing challenges along the way.

It’ll also see periodic updates that revolve around different invading factions and enemies. One example the PlayStation Blog gives is a Scorpion from an alternate reality, which sounds like the perfect excuse for NetherRealm to inject more fanservice and references from previous games.

Footage from the beginning of the game’s story mode has been shared as well, specifically its opening, which may have finally revealed who the main antagonists are.

The first is, surprising no one, Shang Tsung. While you’ll need to pre-order Mortal Kombat 1 to play as him, he’s clearly being set up as one of the major threats for the story.

Interestingly, he’s no longer the mighty sorcerer he was in the previous timeline and has been reborn as a con artist posing as an old man, selling fake elixirs and lacking any sort of real magic.

However, he is approached by what looks like Kronika, the main villain of the last game, Mortal Kombat 11. As a reminder, she is an ancient being who controls and manipulates the flow of time, but she was killed by series hero Liu Kang.

How she’s back is a curiosity, but her dialogue suggests she remembers the previous timeline and is promising Shang Tsung the chance to become the all-powerful baddie he used to be.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 19.
