A teenager who robbed musician Aled Jones threatened to attack him with a machete, a court has heard.

The Walking In The Air singer, 45, was robbed in Chiswick, West London in July while walking with his son Lucas.

A 16-year-old thug stole Jones’ £17,000 Rolex watch, after threatening to chop his arm off with a machete if he did not hand it over.

The youth appeared at Wimbledon Youth Court on Thursday where his solicitor pleaded guilty on his behalf, as he was two hours late to the hearing.

The Mail Online reports the teenager was bailed to appear at another youth court in September for sentencing.

He has been in the care of the local authority since the robbery, the court heard.

Songs of Praise presenter Jones was issued with multiple threats as he was accosted in broad daylight, with the teenager caught on CCTV as he fled the scene, including placing the machete back in his trousers.

Police found the weapon in his bedroom when they called to the offender’s house – and he was reportedly wearing the same outfit as seen in CCTV.

A police officer reportedly recognised the offender when his image was circulated, and while Jones could not pick out the teenager from an ID parade, his son accurately pointed him out.

Wimbledon Youth Court heard from prosecutor Robert Simpson that Jones and his 18-year-old son Lucas were walking on Chiswick Road at around 5.30pm when in broad daylight the youth approached them.

He pulled a machete from his tracksuit bottoms and demanded the watch, with Simpson saying he ‘threatened to cut off his arm and other threats to obtain the Rolex watch he was wearing.’

The teenager cannot be named due to his age, and his solicitor Gero Di Piazza entered a guilty plea on his behalf to charges of robbery and possession of a bladed weapon.

Jones and his son were not in court, where District Judge Andrew Sweet warned the teenager he could face a youth detention order or the case could be sent ot the crown court due to the seriousness of the offence.

The singer had been prepared to give evidence via video link however, as the teenager had initially pleaded not guilty, and both father and son had appeared briefly on a screen as the judge told them they would not need to give evidence.
