Santa Monica Studio is making a DLC expansion for the most recent God Of War but while it’s more than half done it won’t be out this year.

Some franchises almost always get DLC and with others it’s the exact opposite, with God Of War never having had any substantial expansions. According to one reliable leaker though, that’s set to change with God Of War Ragnarök.

Previously, co-director Eric Williams said that Ragnarök would not have any DLC (and that he’d rather make a Castlevania game instead), which surprised no one. But supposedly he’s already deep in development of an expansion – although it’s unknown whether it will be a standalone release or not.

Fellow Sony studio Naughty Dog has released both in-game expansions and standalone releases for its game but with God Of War it likely depends on what the purpose of the DLC story is. If it’s to create a bridge to a new setting then a standalone release makes the most sense.

Santa Monica Studio has previously said that Ragnarök is the end of the Norse series of games and while there are no clear hints as to where a future game would be set there are lots of obvious options, with Egypt being one particular fan favourite.

Although the DLC rumour is a surprise, Sony Santa Monica did recently post a job ad for someone that had knowledge of both of the previous God Of War games.

At the time, this was assumed to be an indication that work had begun on a new sequel, but it only makes more sense in the context of DLC.

The information came via the leaker The Snitch, who usually deals in more cryptic hints, generally about lower profile titles. In this case though he was relaying information from a different source, one who accurately leaked information and screenshots about Rise Of The Ronin before its official announcement.

Considering how empty Sony’s first party release schedules are at the moment, a standalone expansion makes a lot of sense, since it would be a lot quicker to make than a fully fledged game.

Although, so far there’s no indication of what it’s release date might be, other than it’s not this year.
