Lockpicking can be a finicky skill to master in Starfield so here’s some beginner’s tips to help you get started.

While exploring the universe of Starfield, you’ll need to battle alien wildlife, engage in space dogfights, manage your ragtag crew, and… pick locks.

That last one seems awfully mundane for a sci-fi epic and more at home in something like Skyrim, but it is a skill you will need to familiarise yourself with, especially if you want to crack open every safe and obstructing door you come across.

So, here’s a quick rundown of how lockpicking in Starfield works and how you can make the whole thing much easier for yourself.

How to pick locks in Starfield

First things first, you can’t pick any locks without a lockpick. Or, as Starfield calls them, digipicks.

Digipicks are fairly simple to obtain since they can be acquired from chests or from looting dead enemies. You can sometimes even find them scattered on the ground, so be sure to keep a diligent eye out.

If needed, you can always just buy them from a store, but that’s money you could put towards upgrading your ship. So, maybe only buy digipicks as a last resort.

The tricky part is completing the puzzle required to open safes and doors. It involves slotting multiple digipicks into a circular puzzle, where you have to make sure you put the correct one in the correct holes or otherwise it’s wasted.

You can undo your last move if you’ve made a mistake, but that still costs you a digipick, and you’ll also lose one if you back out from the puzzle.

If you don’t mind being cheeky, you can always quicksave before attempting to lockpick. That way, if you mess up too much, you can just reload your last save and get all your spent digipicks back.

If you find yourself struggling with lockpicking puzzles a lot it’s recommended you invest any skill points you obtain from levelling up into the Security skill (under Tech).

At higher levels, this skill not only lets you try picking more advanced locks, but you can also gain hints to help you figure out which slot to put the digipicks in. It even grants you auto-attempts that let you skip the puzzle entirely.

Some backgrounds for your player character grant you one point in the security skill so, if you want a headstart, we recommend choosing one of those when you make your character. The backgrounds in question are:

Bouncer – also comes with points in boxing and fitness

Cyber Runner – also comes with points in stealth and theft

Cyberneticist – also comes with points in medicine and lasers

Industrialist – also comes with points in persuasion and research methods
