Smash Mouth mourned the death of the band’s singer Steve Harwell and paid tributes to the 56-year-old after heartbreaking news was announced on Monday.

The star’s bandmembers shared their devastation at the loss of the musician on Instagram alongside a vintage picture of Harwell.

They penned a message that read: ‘Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger-than-life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle.

‘Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.

‘And the fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable.

‘His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cajones.

‘Steve lived a 100% full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out. Good night Heevo Veev.

‘Rest in peace knowing you aimed for the stars, and magically hit your target.’

News of his death was confirmed by his manager Robert Hayes, who said the artist ‘passed peacefully and comfortably’ at his home.

The American rocker had been battling end-stage liver failure before his death and was receiving care in a hospice, while his family remained by his side.

Tributes flooded social media with musician Chad Tepper writing: ‘Nooo love you dude rest easy brother.’

Another said: ‘Your music was soundtrack to my childhood… nothing but positive memories with each song. RIP Steve!’

Harwell rose to fame with the US rock band who are known for their hits including All Star and their cover of I’m a Believer.
