It may be less buggy than previous Bethesda games, but Starfield players are still encountering some very weird issues.

Prior to its launch, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty proudly described Starfield as Bethesda’s least buggy game yet… which isn’t exactly saying much considering Bethesda’s reputation.

It’s been over a week since Starfield’s early access launch and it seems Booty’s claim was accurate; this is the most bug-free game Bethesda has put out.

That doesn’t mean it hasn’t got any, though, as a quick scour through the internet will quickly demonstrate how many weird, sometimes hilarious, technical issues Starfield suffers from.

One common example is characters missing most of their heads, leaving just a pair of eyes and teeth, which is more terrifying than any alien creature you’ll encounter.

The below clip features a number of characters missing their heads although some of them lose their torso instead, rendering them a floating collection of limbs.

Some players are encountering bugs fairly early into their playthrough, such as this one who spotted an enemy running in the air during the first combat encounter.

Another player, upon shooting an enemy corpse, caused the character’s head to stretch out from their body. Eventually, the whole body starts to morph as if it’s being pulled into a singularity. The body horror is only marginally offset by the accompanying Moon music from the old DuckTales game.

It’s not just characters that can be affected. Even inanimate objects can freak out for whatever reason, as seen when one player opened a door to find a box randomly spinning all over the place.

Rebs Gaming highlighted one such issue that we have to assume is a bug, though it did reveal an interesting aspect about the game. It turns out you can’t fast travel if an alien creature is on board your ship; something a player discovered upon finding one such alien had somehow crammed itself into the back of their ship.

One Patrick Maka managed to find a bug that can actually help you. In the basement of Constellation’s headquarters, you can find an elite Mark I Spacesuit in a glass case.

It’s stuck behind a difficult lockpicking puzzle, but you can grab it straight away just by standing in the right position, since doing so will bring up a prompt that lets you add it to your inventory – even though you shouldn’t be able to.

The majority of bugs aren’t so helpful though. One player couldn’t locate their ship after exploring a planet. When they fast travelled to it, they found it had somehow fallen through the surface and was now stuck ‘inside’ the planet.

Perhaps the most bizarre example we’ve come across is a claim by Valve engineer Fletcher Dunn, who says they were unable to fire any ranged weapon after loading a save file.

Their solution? Changing their player character’s gender. ‘I really don’t understand what kind of code can even produce bugs like this,’ says Dunn.

Time will tell how much of this gets ironed out by Bethesda, although don’t be surprised if fans get to them first. They were preparing to fix Starfield’s bugs long before the game was even out.

Starfield is available for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
