WWE superstar Dominik Mysterio has reflected on an emotional moment he shared with his best friend after facing his dad Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania.

The current NXT North American Champion – who is part of the Judgment Day on Raw alongside Rhea Ripley, Finn Balor and Damian Priest – battled the legendary masked luchador in a rare father versus son match back in April in a ‘surreal’ moment for both men.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Dom revealed how he went for a late night walk in the early hours after the high profile bout to let everything sink in.

”I think after the match, because everything leading up to it was just so hectic and crazy, with all the shows we had, all the live events and media we had to do,’ he said of the moment the enormity of the occasion all clicked.

He added: ‘After the match, I got back to my hotel room – we were in LA so there were food vendors outside our hotel. I think it was like 2 in the morning, and it was just me and my best friend, my buddy Daniel.

‘I texted him, I was like, “Hey I’m gonna go get some food, I’m not too tired”, because my adrenaline I think was still going. It was me and him, we walked out there, we got some hot dogs.

‘I was like, “Dude… I just wrestled my dad at Wrestlemania. This is pretty surreal”! I was like, “Damn, and I beat his ass!” ‘

The 26-year-old star has been around the wrestling world his entire life, and even appeared on WWE television as a child during his dad’s rivalry with the late, great Eddie Guerrero.

Ever since his debut at SummerSlam 2020, fans had been clamouring for a match between Dom and Rey, even though the Hall of Famer repeatedly played down the idea.

‘I don’t think he wanted to do it, and I know there was a time that I didn’t wanna do it either,’ Dom claimed.

‘But then things change, Judgment Day happened and I kinda came to the realisation that if I wanted to live up to the Mysterio name, or pass the Mysterio name, or even hold onto the Mysterio name and take it and run with it, I had to get through him.’

He insisted the match was something he needed to do, and despite not getting the win at WrestleMania, he thinks their issues in the ring are settled – for now, at least.

‘It’s still something I had to do, but I was not successful at WrestleMania, unfortunately there were some issues there that were caused by other different parties [like Bad Bunny],’ he said.

‘But, we’ll see what the future holds. I definitely have some unfinished business with my dad, but as of now I think business is handled.’

WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on TNT Sports 1.
