The BBC’s flagship presenters will have to follow a new set of guidelines after the row over Gary Lineker’s social media posts.

The broadcaster’s top stars will be banned from political campaigning and criticising the character of individual politicans although will be allowed to express their views on issues and policies, according to the rules.

Talent will also be banned from endorsing or slamming a political party while their programme is broadcasting and for a two week period before the series starts and ends.

The BBC report added there will be a ‘particular responsibility’ for presenters ‘to respect the BBC’s impartiality, because of their profile on the BBC’ on flagship shows, such as Match of the Day, The Apprentice and Strictly.

Other flagship shows include Antiques Roadshow, Dragon’s Den, MasterChef and The One Show.

More to follow.
