Becky Lynch and Ilja Dragunov are at the top of the NXT mountain after WWE put on a stellar show at No Mercy.

The company’s third brand put on a show worthy of the old black and gold TakeOver legacy with a varied and entertaining card blending the best of the current crop of stars with the champions of the future.

The Extreme Rules Match in the main event highlighted that perfectly as Lynch successfully defended her NXT Women’s Championship against rising star Tiffany Stratton.

It’s hard to believe Stratton has only been wrestling a couple of years at this point as she moves so effortlessly around the ring, and soars through the air like a seasoned pro.

She got busted open early on in the match as she and Lynch ended up brawling up the arena steps, and they went all out here with broke Barbie dolls, kendo sticks, steel chairs, a barbed wire baseball bat and a fire extinguisher all making appearances.

Stratton had some big moments, showing off her athleticism as she sent Lynch through the barricade, and hitting a Swanton Bomb off the top rope through a table on the outside.

In the end, a Man-handle Slam onto a pile of chairs was enough for The Man to retain, and instead of new signing Jade Cargill it was Tegan Nox watching on.

The Welsh star will challenge Lynch for the gold on Monday Night Raw, so it was smart to have her on the front row to take in the action.

Meanwhile, in the penultimate match Carmelo Hayes failed to retain his NXT Championship as he lost to Ilja Dragunov in an absolutely brutal sequel which somehow surpassed their match at the Great American Bash.

Ilja has deservedly finally reached the top of NXT, while now-former champ still looked like an absolute megastar even in a loss, and it’ll be interesting to see how things go between him and Trick Williams after the latter’s win over Dominik Mysterio earlier in the night.

Elsewhere, The Family of Tony D’Angelo and Stacks retained the NXT Tag Team Titles in a wild Fatal 4 Way featuring the Creed Brothers, OTM and the team of Humberto Carrillo and Angel Garza.

Noam Dar needed the whole of Meta-Four and the help of Gallus to beat Butch in a fantastic Heritage Cup match fought under British Rounds Rules, while Baron Corbin’s win over Bron Breakker got the night started in a thrilling way.

WWE NXT airs Tuesday nights at 1am on TNT Sports 1.
