Hugh Bonneville’s estranged wife was reportedly seen breaking down in tears as she told friends of their divorce.
A spokesperson for the Downton Abbey star, 59, confirmed last week that he and Lulu, 55, had separated after 25 years of marriage.
The couple – who share 22-year-old son Felix – married in 1998 and also have a family home in West Sussex.
A source has now claimed that Lulu felt their split came ‘out of the blue’.
Speaking to The Sun, a local resident said they saw Lulu breaking the news to pals at a boozer close to her house.
‘She got incredibly emotional talking about the break-up,’ they said.

Meanwhile, The Sun reports that Hugh ended things with Lulu – real name Lucinda – back in July.
A source claims that ‘he sat Lulu down one evening and said it’s over.’
‘It came totally out of the blue,’ they told the publication.
Lulu is now thought to be on holiday with a group of friends in a bid to take her mind off things.
When news of the couple’s shock split broke, it followed Hugh attending the wedding of his Downton co-star Michelle Dockery to Jasper Waller-Bridge just weeks before.
Flying solo, he was without both Lulu and without his wedding ring.

‘It’s a shame as locally they were known to be a very sociable couple,’ a source began of their separation.
‘Hugh has been away from home filming a lot this year. He has lost a bit of weight this summer, he was looking trim, tanned and relaxed.’
Lulu met Hugh when they were teenagers.
He has since praised her for being his ‘bedrock’ and ‘anchor’.
The Notting Hill actor confessed after they wed: ‘I thought I would be a bachelor for years.’
Lulu has insisted she wasn’t fazed by her husband’s fame, given that they have known each other for so long.
She said in 2012: ‘I don’t take any notice. I don’t notice women fawning over him — although I know everybody talks about it.

‘Don’t forget, we met as teenagers and have a lot of history. We’re not fazed by the glitz of the showbusiness world.
‘We are just home-loving people and don’t make a habit of hanging out at celebrity parties.’
‘I don’t really have a job but my hobby is hanging out at car boot sales, buying trinkets and doing them up and reselling them,’ she added.
Reps for Hugh Bonneville have been contacted for comment.
