Susanna Reid left Good Morning Britain viewers stunned over her interview technique after grilling Rishi Sunak.

The broadcaster, 52, was described an ‘absolute icon’ for confronting the prime minister over NHS funding, the cost of living crisis and HS2 on Tuesday’s episode of the ITV news show.

‘She knew what she was going up against and very impressive how she kept directing him back to the questions,’ a viewer commented on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘Susanna is doing a brilliant job interviewing the prime Minister #gmb,’ another remarked, while a third said: ‘Susanna Reid has just made the prime minister look like a complete out of touch idiot, which is pretty on brand.’

During the face-to-face at the Conservative party conference, Susanna addressed rumours the northern leg of high-speed rail line to Manchester had been scrapped.

Susanna had asked Sunak if he was letting down the people of Manchester, where the conference was being held, by potentially axing the transport link, to which he dodged the question and insisted the event was going well.

Refusing to back down, Susanna continued to calmly ask him to confirm or deny the cancellation of the extra HS2 route, but the flustered PM said he would not comment on the speculation.

Elsewhere, Susanna lamented the length of NHS waiting lists, which have hit record highs over the past couple of months, remarking that the public health system is ‘broken’ under Sunak’s watch.

While Sunak denied the government was responsible for the NHS’s decline, Susanna continued to relay figures to the contrary, including that over 7million people were currently awaiting appointments.

On the cost of living crisis, Susanna recounted the plight of an 80-year-old man whose food bill increased from £160 to £210 in a matter of months for the same items and was as a consequence faced with the heartbreaking decision of going to a food bank or giving away his ill dog.

Billionaire Sunak did not comment on the specific case and claimed bringing inflation down was the solution to help the millions of people who are struggling to pay energy bills.

It’s not the first sitting prime minister Susanna has interviewed and then won praise for her technique.

Last May, she eventually grilled Boris Johnson – after he chose to hide in a fridge over speaking to the presenter and her former co-host Piers Morgan in the lead-up to the 2019 general election.

‘Are you honest, Prime Minister?’ was Susanna’s opening question before she tore the then-PM apart.

She put him on the spot over the crippling cost of living, the lockdown breaches in his own office and the scandals that engulfed his own party, which have now been made into a TV drama.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
