Sir Alex Ferguson’s wife Lady Cathy dies aged 84-Emily Bashforth-Entertainment – Metro

Sir Alex Ferguson’s wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson – formerly Holding – has died at the age of 84.

She sadly died in Cheshire yesterday morning (October 5).

A statement on behalf of the Ferguson family announced: ‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

‘The family asks for privacy at this time.’

Lady Cathy met Manchester United legend, now 81, in 1964 when he was 23, as they both worked at a typewriter factory.

They married two years later and, in 1998, welcomed their first child Mark.

Mark was followed by twins, Darren and Jason, in 1972.

Sir Alex has spoken publicly about his wife and her support for his career over the years.

When he announced his retirement as Man Utd’s manager in 2013, the football icon said: ‘My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement.

‘Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.’
