This time his words send a worrying message to his young and impressionable fanbase.

Rihanna once revealed she ‘doesn’t have a friendship’ with Drake and, after his latest lyrics – which are believed to be about her – it’s not hard to see why.

For many of us, if our ex appeared to publicly talk about how ‘average’ our sex was while also taking aim at our new partner, who happens to be the father of our children, it wouldn’t exactly keep us on amicable terms.

Drake seems to have done just that with the release of his new album For All The Dogs, which dropped on Friday. In just a few days, it’s already sparked controversy with Joe Budden heavily criticising the body of work and Drake in turn eviscerating the rapper-turned-podcaster in a truly scathing public letter.

However, it’s Drake’s lyrics that seem to be about Rihanna that were really uncalled for.

For ease, I’ll break it down for you.

On the track Fear Of Heights, the Canadian superstar raps: ‘Why they make it sound like I’m still hung up on you? That could never be / Gyal can’t ruin me / Better him than me / Better it’s not me.’

Delivering the low blow, he adds: ‘I’m anti, I’m anti / Yeah, and the sex was average with you / Yeah, I’m anti ’cause I had it with you…

‘And I had way badder b*****s than you, TBH / Yeah, that man, he still with you, he can’t leave you / Y’all go on vacation, I bet it’s Antilles.’

Drake’s use of ‘gyal’ instead of ‘girl’ is exactly the way Rihanna would pronounce the word in her Barbadian accent while Anti could be a clear reference to her 2016 album of the same name (the last one she released before taking an extended hiatus).

The line ‘sex was average’ could link to Rihanna’s song Sex With Me from the Anti album, in which she sings the opposite: ‘Sex with me so amazing.’

Like Sex With Me, Drake’s Fear of Heights goes on to mention a vacation, picking the Antilles as the location – Rihanna is proudly from Barbados which is an island that forms part of the Lesser Antilles. She’s also holidayed there with boyfriend A$AP Rocky several times, which again links back to Drake’s mention of her enjoying vacations with ‘that man.’

He also directly targets A$AP on the track Another Late Night, using the rapper’s nickname and saying: ‘I ain’t pretty flacko, b***h / this s**t get really rocky?’

It’s been years since Drake, 36, and Rihanna, 35, were reported to have dated and both have even had children in that time. It’s a given that rappers will use their lived experiences as inspiration for their music but appearing to target Rihanna unprovoked after so long is just lame.

Nowadays, it also couldn’t be more cliché for a rapper to degrade a woman through his music – it’s happened throughout the history of hip hop – and I particularly hoped that Drake, who has such an influential platform and impressionable young fanbase, was above that.

However, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s poked the bear.

Last year, Megan Thee Stallion fans were outraged when he appeared to accuse her of lying about being shot by Tory Lanez, who has since been convicted of doing exactly that and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

‘This b**** lie ’bout getting shots but she still a stallion,’ he rapped, prompting Megan to fire back: ‘Stop using my shooting for clout b**** ass N****s! Since when tf is it cool to joke abt women getting shot ! You n****s especially RAP N****S ARE LAME!’

Just last week, Drake – real name Aubrey Graham – led his concert-goers in a misogynistic chant of ‘f**k that b***h’ after learning a fan’s ex-girlfriend didn’t turn up to the show.

I’ve always been a fan of Drake, appreciate what he has brought to the rap game and have enjoyed some of his dynamic tour shows. But when it comes to Rihanna, I can’t support the takedown of a woman who has already been physically and emotionally abused by an ex-boyfriend on such a public level.

Their relationship over the years has been unsteady, to say the least. They were first linked to each other in 2009 and went on to release several tracks together, including What’s My Name? and Take Care.

They were on good terms up until 2016 when they collaborated on his song Too Good, but that was also the year when their relationship crumbled.

Drake did the honours of presenting Rihanna with a special award at the MTV VMAs but not before delivering a lengthy speech that culminated with him declaring his love for her. He planted a very wet kiss on her cheek – which has resurfaced on social media in light of his lyrics – but Rihanna never reciprocated the level of fondness he showered her with.

In fact, when reflecting on the awkward moment two years later, Rihanna told Vogue that she and Drake ‘don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies, either. It is what it is.’

Your exes tend to show you who they really are when you’ve parted ways; do they sing your praises or drag you down even if it wasn’t a particularly disastrous end to the relationship?

We don’t know what went down with Drake and Rihanna but it’s very petulant of him to reduce their romance to how good she was or wasn’t in the bedroom, especially when you once hailed her the love of your life, it’s now six years later and there are new relationships and three children between you.

Drake’s lyrics used to be the soundtrack of our summers, the captions for our social media posts and some of the most quotable bars in pop culture.

However, his recent attempts at being provocative are just sad.

Rihanna’s clearly moved on and it’s probably time he did the same.
