I’m skinny but still have a tummy – my 9 life-changing hacks to keep your gut hidden & why asymmetrical hems are key
A WOMAN who’s skinny with a tummy has revealed the nine life-changing hacks she’s learned to keep her gut hidden.
Chi Li is 5ft 2, and regularly shares her petite fashion tips on her YouTube page.

In one of her videos, she explained that while she’s petite and slim, she still has a tummy which can’t always be hidden just by sucking it in.
So instead, she’s worked out some clever styling tips to conceal her stomach and draw the eye elsewhere.
Kicking off with perhaps one of her more obvious tips, Chi said it’s a good idea to steer clear of any clingy fabrics.
“If they’re stretchy, they’re going to be clinging to the stomach and that’s the last thing you want to do,” she said.
“Every bit of the tummy is going to be showing.
“But that doesn’t mean that your fabrics should have no stretch at all.
“They don’t need to be stiff but they do need to have enough weight so that they’re thick enough and they’re skimming your body instead of clinging.”
Another clever trick Chi uses is to create “three columns of colour”.
“First, your under layer, you need to wear the same colour top and bottom,” she said.
“Second step, this is where the magic happens. Now you top it off with a light coloured outer layer.
“You then have three columns of colour in the front, which dissects your front and tricks the eye into thinking your stomach is now much smaller.”
Chi isn’t a fan of a skinny belt, and urged those with a tummy to avoid at all costs because it just makes the stomach look even more obvious.
“The worst is when you wear a skinny belt that has a very sharp contrasting colour with what you are wearing,” she added.
“This is going to draw all the attention to your tummy.”
Another more obvious tip is to avoid a bodycon silhouette – in other words, don’t wear a tight top with a tight skirt.
If you do want to do that, try a peplum top.
“When you wear a peplum, even though your top is fitted and your skirt is tight, the ruffles are covering up your stomach so nothing’s showing and it looks like your tummy has disappeared,” she explained.
“But here’s the important part. Not all the peplums are created equally.
“Look for the ruffles that are long enough to cover up the widest part of your tummy.
“And this works with peplum dresses too , because the ruffle flares out and it also forms a contrast with your waist and this is going to create the illusion that you have a waistline.”
One of the hacks Chi loves to use in the autumn and winter is to stick to tops with asymmetrical hems.
“If you have a tummy, asymmetrical hems are very flattering,” she said.
“Most of the time, we’re wearing tops with a horizontal hem.
“Because it goes straight across our tummy, horizontal expands us and also makes our tummy more obvious.
“When you wear an asymmetrical hem, it’s no longer going straight across, instead it’s adding an angle.
“That’s why they look more slimming and can make your tummy look less obvious.”
Something that does the complete opposite is trousers, shorts or a skirt with a paperbag waist.
“These are very cute and on-trend but because you’ve got the extra fabric, it’s just going to make your stomach area look even bigger than it actually is, and this is only going to draw more attention to it,” she said.
Instead, give pleated trousers a try.
“The pleats create space and is going to make sure that the fabric of your trousers is not clinging to your stomach, therefore they can disguise your tummy,” she said.
“I have tried different types of pleated trousers. Some work better than others.
“If the pleats are too big, they can create too much space and that actually can make your stomach look even bigger.
“Find a fine balance.”
And Chi’s last tip is to avoid anything low rise.
“I adore your tips and the humorous way you make your point,.” one person commented on the video.
“Thank you for making it OK to have an issue (like tummy) and still look fabulous!”
“Thank you so much Chi!!!” another added.
“This SUCH a game changer for women like me who have IBS!!! The bloat from IBS kept me from my passion for fashion for a long time.
“But now with your help, I’ll get back to it with confidence.”
While a third commented: “This is so refreshing!
“I’m someone considered thin but I have a tummy and have on multiple occasions over the years been asked if I was pregnant!
“Good reminder that it’s not just me! Thanks for the tips.”
