Shoppers are mortified by Y2K fashion accessory that’s making a comeback – but loads are secretly loving it
THE noughties had some pretty distinctive fashion trends, from super low-slung cargo pants to barely-there tube tops and trucker caps.
And let’s admit it: many of us are glad the days of flashing our midriff whenever we go out have faded to a distant memory.
Millennial shoppers were shocked to see noughties staples back on the shelves in Urban Outfitterstiktok/@juliaq_____

But it seems it might be time to dust off those stashed away mini-skirts and ugg boots, because if social media is anything to go by, we’re living through a noughties revival.
In a video shared on TikTok, Michigan-based influencer Julia shared the Y2K staples she eyed while on a recent shopping trip to Urban Outfitters.
The first noughties staple she spotted was a sequin tote bag which looks as though it’s come straight from the wardrobe of the decade’s icon Paris Hilton.
The glittery accessory comes in both a silver and hot fuchsia colourway, and is exactly the same sort of statement piece that the noughties are synonymous with.
And as if that weren’t jarring enough, Julia next showed off perhaps the most notorious 2000s staple that she’d found in the store.
It was, of course, the skinny scarf: a favourite of everyone from Hilary Duff to Ashley Tisdale and Lindsay Lohan.
The UO version comes in a green crochet design and is super long – perfect for doing the iconic wrap.
Other 2000s-reminiscent items on sale in the store included a popcorn shirt, a metallic clutch, and a long fitted denim shirt in a light-blue wash.
“All of the 2000s looks are coming back,” Julia wrote in the caption. “I kind of love it.”
“Who else is p***ed they didn’t save their outfits?!” she joked.
Her clip quickly racked up nearly 14k views, with users in disbelief by how Gen Zs are reembracing the decade’s controversial couture.
“Omg! I had that exact silver sequin bag,” one wrote.
“I still have my sequin purse from ages ago,” another bragged.
But not everyone was quite so happy to see the return of the noughties garments.
“Noooo. NONONONONONOOOOOO,” one wrote.
Julia isn’t the only eagle-eyed fashionista who’s picked up on the current 2000s revival.
Millennials have been up-in-arms about the return of another rather divisive outfit pairing: a dress over trousers.
The bizarre combination was spotted on numerous runways at Fashion Week, including Conner Ives’ Fall 2023 show.
One shopper recently shared a picture of a mannequin styled in a dress and trousers, along with the caption: “I saw this in Urban Outfitters the other day and almost had a heart attack.
“Dear Gen Z, please don’t do it.”
