In just a week, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is outperforming Spider-Man 2, as it’s

Sales data from the launches of Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder last week showed that Sony’s exclusive outsold Nintendo’s, in terms of the first week sales of their physical editions.

In the second week, things have swung the other way, as now it’s now Mario that sits at the top of the sales chart while the Spider-Men take second place.

Spider-Man 2’s physical sales dropped by 69% in its second week, which is on the higher end of normal for a big name release, which you’d normally expect to drop around 60% in its second week. By comparison, Super Mario sales fell by 55%, which is a little better than the average.

As ever, Mario games, and Nintendo titles in general, tend to have longer legs than other franchises, with Spider-Man 2 always likely to be the more front-loaded of the pair.

Wonder is also firmly targeting a family audience, with the game clearly due to turn up in a lot of Christmas stockings this year. Wonder also includes co-op, allowing for parents to play alongside their kids – whereas Spider-Man 2 is single-player only.

There’s nothing too surprising in the results though, especially as they don’t include digital downloads, which you’d expect to take a higher percentage of Spider-Man 2’s sales.

Both games are clearly major successes, as Spider-Man 2 is now Sony’s fastest selling PlayStation exclusive and Super Mario Bros. Wonder has become the franchise’s fastest selling entry ever in Europe.

Elsewhere on the chart, GamesIndustry.biz reveals that the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection and EA Sports UFC 5 debuted in fourth and seventh place, respectively.

The rest of the chart is mostly unchanged compared to last week, aside from Nintendo Switch Sports and the Switch version of Minecraft swapping places.

Although it’s noted that Sonic Superstars suffered a far worse drop in sales than either Mario or Spider-Man – 72% – which resulted in it falling out of the top 10 to 15th place.
