Netflix star Barton Cowperthwaite has shared his diagnosis of a ‘decent-sized’ brain tumour, aged just 31.

The actor and dancer is best known for appearing in ballet Tiny Pretty Things, in which he played Oren Lennox.

This weekend, Barton shared the devastating news that he had been diagnosed with ‘at least a stage 2 glioma.’

A glioma is ‘a malignant tumour of the glial tissue of the nervous system.’

Sharing photos of himself in hospital and of his brain scan, Barton wrote: ‘It is a fairly decent sized brain tumour. The tumor’s cells originate in the brain, so it’s not spread from a cancer anywhere else in the body.

‘The only course of treatment for something like this is brain surgery. Docs so far have been confident that they’ll be able to remove most of the tumor, and that after a successful operation, and some rehab, I will be operating like my (amazing, talented, brilliant, hilarious) self.

‘That being said it seems like scans and checkups will be a part of my life for its lengthy remainder.’

He added that he and his family are ‘taking several days to get second opinions.’

‘Planning to go into surgery middle or end of next week,’ he shared. ‘I’ll do my best to be open about the journey on here.’

Keeping his spirits up, Barton vowed: ‘I am planning on fully bouncing back to be better than my former glory!

‘Please feel free to reach out and I’ll do my best to stay connected with as many people as I can.’

‘All my love 💙’, he signed off.

The star’s post was met with hundreds of supportive messages.

Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen Hauer commented a praying hands emoji to show she is thinking of him.

Fellow Thing Pretty Things star Brennan Clost wrote: ‘Oh Barty, I’m so sorry to hear this. Sending you so much love ❤️❤️❤️ you’ve got this!!!’

Actress Casimere Jollette added: ‘Love you Bart ❤️ sending so much healing to you. You got this.’

In a later update, Barton shared a video and began with: ‘I’d like to start off by just saying thank you from the bottom of my heart. The response and the outpouring of support has been absolutely staggering and words have no capacity to express my gratitude and I’m just overwhelmed.’

He continued: ‘People have been really curious about how I was able to discover the tumour. I, over the past eight weeks, have had several seizures, the most recent of which landed me in the ER.

‘They were able to perform a CAT scan which discovered an abnormality and from that point they sent me to a different facility to get further imaging done.

‘The MRI showed a lemon-sized glioma in my right frontal lobe. So, thankfully, it is not of immediate concern. They were able to discharge me and send me home.’

He added that he is ‘gathering the troops’ and ‘strategising’ ahead of ‘meeting with some of the best of the best’ next week for further medical advice.

Barton will then be able to decide where he has the surgery done.

‘Again, I love you all, I’m so grateful, I’ll keep sending updates,’ he concluded.

Barton has since set up a fundraising page so people can contribute to his surgery and recovery costs.

His goal is $50,000 (£40,906) and over $27,000 (£22,089) has been raised currently.
