The Pogues singer Shane McGowan’s cause of death has been revealed.

The Irish songwriter’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke has confirmed he died of pneumonia after battling a devastating brain swelling condition.

MacGowan, who would have turned 66 on Christmas Day, had been battling viral encephalitis and was released from hospital just last week.

Funeral details for the Irish singer, best known for the song Fairytale of New York,have not yet been confirmed, as reported by the New York Times.

The Irish songwriter’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, announced his death in a family statement on Thursday, sharing: ‘Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life.’

She added: ‘I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures.’

MacGowan is best-known for the iconic festive song that propelled him to fame alongside Kirsty MacColl upon its release in November 1987.

However it never reached number one in the UK, peaking at number two.
