Wham! in December hardly seems cause for major offence but one DJ at a football game has outraged 7,000 fans by playing Last Christmas.

The Christmas classic is up there with watching The Holiday and eating gingerbread biscuits in terms of festive traditions – and is currently fighting The Pogues’ for the festive number one.

The beloved George Michael song is climbing the charts but fans at Northampton Town criticised DJ Matt Facer for blasting the 1986 hit.

Facer ruined the cult game Whamageddon for a stadium full of fans at the home game against Portsmouth FC on December 2.

Whamageddon – where people attempt to avoid hearing Last Christmas until Christmas Eve – first started over a decade ago and has grown in popularity since.

‘I never knew people took it so seriously,’ he told the BBC.

Facer, also known as DJ Matty, added Last Christmas to his half time set in the League One game at Sixfields – with 7,215 people officially Whammed.

He was aware of Whamageddon, thinking it would be funny to get that many people at once but those at the stadium weren’t so forgiving.

‘I had a bit of an insult on Twitter, light-hearted, [saying] it was not a nice thing to do, and apparently that was quite tame to what was being said in the stadium,’ he added.

‘So I officially apologise to everybody whose Christmas I’ve ruined.’

Whamageddon now has an official website with set rules and regulations, with a reminder that it is not a ‘Battle Royale’.

The site reads: ‘While we can’t stop you from deliberately sending your friends to Whamhalla, the intention is that this is a survival game.’

Facer has promised not to play Last Christmas at his next gig, adding in an interview with BBC Radio Northampton that it’s a shame that he can’t play the song until late December without upsetting people.

Last Christmas is currently battling Fairytale of New York by The Pogues for the festive top spot, having achieved the coveted position in 2021.
