Elon Musk has responded to Netflix’s use of Teslas in the streaming giant’s star-studded new movie, Leave the World Behind.

Starring Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts, Leave the World Behind is an apocalyptic thriller and one scene in particular has got people – Elon included – talking.

The scene in question sees Ethan, Julia and their kids attacked by a fleet of driverless Teslas as they fly down an abandoned highway and crash into one another.

Netflix shared a video of the scene on X, formerly Twitter, and Elon – who founded the electric car company – was quick to respond, tweeting: ‘Teslas can charge from solar panels even if the world goes fully Mad Max and there is no more gasoline!’

The billionaire’s post quickly started doing the internet rounds, with one person saying Netflix had ‘triggered’ Elon, writing on X: ‘Best thing about LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND is [it] triggered Elon.’

Leave the World Behind’s director, Sam Esmail, also picked up on Elon’s tweet, resharing it online and adding: ‘My movie LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND is now streaming on Netflix.’

Leave The World Behind follows a family whose luxury getaway in Long Island is interrupted by a nationwide blackout. As the threat goes, the family must figure out how best to survive while also confronted by two strangers who may or may not be a threat themselves.

There are several references to Friends throughout the film – something Julia addressed when she spoke to Metro.co.uk last month.

Julia famously made a cameo on the TV series in 1996 and when asked if it was an intentional nod to her cameo, Julia said: ‘It wasn’t! But it was a great device that Sam [Esmail] wrote when he adapted the book, which is such a beautiful novel that Rumaan [Alam] wrote and when he added that element for the daughter, it’s just so great.

‘It just shows that we all have something in culture that just comforts us and makes us feel good. For me it’s America’s Funniest Home Videos, it’s different for different people and so to have that thing that at the end of the day, you can sit and it gives you comfort.

‘It’s beautiful.’
