Fans have been enthralled by the first look at Adam Sandler’s new movie for Netflix, Spaceman, which sees the popular comedy actor in a serious role once again – and in a film dubbed a ‘must see’.

The 24-second clip introduces Sandler’s Czech astronaut character Jakub, who is on a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system.

However, all is not as straightforward as it seems, as Jakub encounters a giant talking spider-like creature, named Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano), as revealed in one of the newly released images.

The trailer focuses on showing Jakub (Sandler) wading through a river in a forest on a distant planet.

It’s Dano as Hanuš, though, that narrates it, revealing as he talks to Jakub: ‘Just like you I fled my planet, through galaxies, through black holes, through time – and then I found… you.’

The clip then zooms in on Sandler’s face as Jakub in his spacesuit as he looks up in quiet awe at something.

Reaction to the Netflix movie’s first teaser trailer, with the film set to drop on Netflix in March, was overwhelmingly positive as fans shared their enthusiasm for Happy Gilmore and Grown Ups star Sandler’s return to serious fare.

‘When Adam does a drama, it is a must see. Can’t wait,’ posted user @siavm in the comments on YouTube.

‘Love it when Adam Sandler takes on serious roles,’ agreed @rometherevenant8749. ‘His acting in Reign Over Me is severely underrated imo [sic].’

‘Adam Sandler is more multi-talented at acting than we give him credit for,’ chimed in @pepito2847.

Austin Hibbler was also excited, adding: ‘Grew up loving Adam Sandler comedies and now that I’m older I really appreciate how much talent he has. Love seeing him in dramatic roles.’

‘I was almost worried it was going to go off the rails but thank God it’s a serious movie. Adam always shines best in his serious roles,’ shared another fan.

Although well known for his broader comedic roles in movies like Big Daddy, Mr Deeds and 50 First Dates, Sandler has also had success with dramas like The Meyerowitz Stories, Punch-Drunk Love, Uncut Gems and one of his most recent films, Hustle.

Spaceman’s synopsis reveals that Jakub is six months into his mission when he realises that the marriage he left behind on Earth might not be waiting for him when he returns.

Fans were thrilled to see him in a serious drama again, like 2019’s Uncut Gems (Picture: Netflix)

Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Maestro’s Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship.

Hanuš then works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late.

Directed by Johan Renck and based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also stars The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar as technician Peter, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini as Commissioner Tuma, Jakub’s commanding officer.

Sandler is also alone onscreen for the majority of the film.

‘I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,’ director Johan Renck told Netflix as Spaceman’s first trailer was released.

The Murder Mystery franchise has also been a big hit (Picture: Netflix/Moviestore/Rex/Shutterstock)

‘I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.’

Sandler has a lucrative deal in place with Netflix, which has already been extended more than once, and back in November 2020 it was revealed that subscribers had spent more than two billion hours watching his films since 2015.

Animated hit Leo, his last film for the streaming platform, gave Netflix its biggest debut for an animated film to date, while he has also had success with Murder Mystery and its recent sequel, opposite close pal Jennifer Aniston.

Spaceman will stream exclusively on Netflix from March 1, 2024.
