Antiques Roadshow expert Henry Sandon has died at the age of 95, his son has confirmed.

The much-loved TV star died on Christmas morning at a care home in Malvern, Worcestershire.

Having joined the BBC series in 1979, Sandon was also appointed the curator of the Dyson Perrins Museum at the Royal Worcester factory in 1967.

Paying tribute to his father, cereamics and glass expert John Sandon – who also appeared on Antiques Roadshow – described him as a ‘giant in the world of antiques’.

‘To the millions who tuned in every Sunday evening to watch The Antiques Roadshow, Henry was like a favourite uncle, whose enthusiasm for even the humblest piece of chipped china was infectious,’ he told the BBC.

‘His joy when he discovered a rare Staffordshire pottery owl jug, nicknamed Ozzie, was a magic TV moment few will forget.’

Having led an illustrious career, Sandon became a notable authority on Royal Worcester porcelain, and wrote books on the subject.

He held his position as curator of the Dyson Perrins Museum at the Royal Worcester Factory until the early 1980s.

Sandon was married to his wife, Barbara, for 56 years until her death in 2013.

The couple had three sons together: David, Peter, and John.

The Museum of Royal Worcester paid homage to Sandon in a post shared on X, writing in a statement that the expert will be ‘sorely missed’.

‘Our curator and then patron of the Museum for many years, a much-loved expert who shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for pots and Worcester in person, in books & on tv. Sorely missed.’

‘It is with great sadness we share the news that Henry Sandon passed away on Christmas morning,’ the message read.

Carol Challis, the wife of late actor John Challis, also shared a tribute, which read: ‘My condolences to the family of Henry Sandon who was such a good sport on an episode of Green Green Grass. One Man’s Junk.

‘Sad to say goodbye to such a loved and respected man, but his son John carries on the knowledge.’

Bargain Hunt star Philip Serrell added: ‘Sad news – a man who did so much to promote antiques generally and pots from our local factory died on Christmas morning. RIP Henry Sandon.’
