Get extra familiar with the Nintendo Switch with these battery and storage saving tips, and how to use it on the TV.

The Nintendo Switch might be six years old, but it’s still a very popular gaming device with many features and games.

Recent estimates suggest that Nintendo sold 16.4 million Switch consoles just this year. Even though Switch sales have dropped compared to 2022 numbers, it’s still impressive how it remains a big seller.

If you’re one of the millions who got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas, or just looking for tips and tricks in general, you’ve come to the right place.

Dark mode on the Nintendo Switch

You can turn the background of the Nintendo Switch from white to black, making it more pleasant to use when gaming in a dark room.

To activate dark mode you need to go to System Settings, then click Themes, then select Basic Black. This can be reversed back to the original white background at any time.

How to save battery on Nintendo Switch

Battery life for portable gaming devices are usually pretty poor, and the Nintendo Switch can give you between four and nine hours before you need to charge it (three to seven hours for the Nintendo Switch Lite).

One way to make the battery last is to manually turn the brightness down in the settings menu. Another is to turn off controller vibrations under Controllers and Sensors in Settings.

Using a portable power bank is also a good idea if it’s not possible to charge the Nintendo Switch in a socket over a longer period of time.

A little additional tip is that you can display the battery percentage at all times by going to System in the Settings menu.

Get more storage in you Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite come with 32GB storage, and the Nintendo Switch OLED doubles that at 64GB. That’s not a whole lot, but there are some ways to get around that.

You can save space by archiving already installed games by highlighting the game, press +, select Manage Software, then click Archive Software. All your saves will remain safe and you can continue where you left off once you’ve downloaded the game again.

If you need a lot more space, however, you can add a microSD card. The Nintendo Switch consoles support microSD up to 2GB, microSDHC from 4GB to 32GB, and microSDXC from 64GB and beyond.

Change the button settings on Nintendo Switch

You can change which button does what in the settings too, for both the Joy-Cons and the Switch console itself.

Just head to System Settings, Controllers and Sensors, then Change Button Mapping, and you can customise your Nintendo Switch as you like.

Connect the Switch to the TV

The Nintendo Switch dock allows you to connect the Switch to your TV via its HDMI connection.

Not only that, though, you can also connect mouse, keyboard, and headphones to the Switch via the dock’s three USB outputs. The Switch also supports Bluetooth connectivity.

How to reset your Nintendo Switch

For whatever reason – maybe your game froze – you can reset the Nintendo Switch by holding the power button until the screen turns off completely.

If you need to do a factory reset – deleting all data and resetting the Switch to its initial state – you can do this by going to System Setting, then System, then Formatting Options, then Initialise Console.
