Despite his famous sister and father, James Haven stays very much out of the spotlight but has given a rare interview about his family.

The 52-year-old brother of Angelina Jolie, 48, says he feels ‘protective’ of the Maleficent actress who he once kissed in a shocking pop culture moment.

After her best supporting actress win for Girl Interrupted, the then 24-year-old declared she was ‘so in love’ with him and locked lips.

They ended up having to defend the kiss and it was later revealed they had visited their mother Marcheline Bertrand, who died of cancer in 2007, in hospital earlier that day.

Since then, James has not spoken publicly about his sister or their relationship – until now.

‘You’re a big part of your nieces and nephews lives, I’m sure they’re like you’re kids in some way,’ said the host of 90who10 podcast, Jessica Entner.

She asked James about how watching Angelina’s life play out in the public eye makes him feel, hinting at her bitter divorce with Brad Pitt.

‘That’s where it all started, it started with the protection of her and [then of her children, my nieces and nephews’ James explained. ‘Those are massively formative years, they’re becoming young adults in their early 20s.

‘That’s so crazy thinking that but yeah, I think it’s just very natural [to feel protective] and I just want to be there. Very much like my mum.’

James continued that whenever he is ‘blessed’ to spend time with his family, he makes sure to be completely invested and present – even switching his phone off.

He added: ‘[It’s] a quality I got from my mum, even though cell phones were not as prevalent as they are now, but back to that idea of her always being like; “You are the focus.”

‘I want to be there for them – or for her – whatever she’s going thought. We have very mutual interests, especially if it’s focuses on how to help kids or stuff like that.’

James acknowledged that the siblings hadn’t been particularly public with their collaborative work before but knows they will work ‘together’ in future.

He also revealed he really enjoys the fame side of things, calling the parties ‘Neverland’ where they just ‘get to play in a larger reality of fantasy.’

Angelina recently revealed she had suffered health issues amid the brutal and drawn out divorce from her Fight Club ex who she split from in 2016.

‘My body reacts very strongly to stress,’ she told WSJ Magazine. ‘My blood sugar goes up and down. I suddenly had Bell’s palsy six months before my divorce.’

The bitter dispute is over their Chateau Miraval business, as well as the custody of their six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox.

‘We had to heal,’ the Oscar-winner continued. ‘There are things we needed to heal from.’
