Brandon Blackstock, who was also Kelly’s manager, was ordered to pay Kelly $2.6 million in November for unlawfully procuring deals that should have been conducted by her talent agent.
According to court documents from the case, which were obtained by New York Post, the 41-year-old singer alleges she told Brandon for years that she’d like to have a role in the singing competition.
She claims that Brandon told her that they were ‘looking for a more sex symbol type’ such as Rihanna.
She also testified that Brandon said that NBC stated it ‘had to have someone that was black. … They had to have a diverse thing,’ and that she was too similar to Blake Shelton, who was a judge on the series.
Eventually, Kelly joined The Voice in 2018 and has been in the series as recently as last year.

Kelly was asked to specify how she remembers the details of the conversation by her lawyer, and according to the publication she said: ‘Well, a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, so that stays.’
Brandon and Kelly married in 2013 – seven years later, Kelly filed for divorce which was finalised in 2022.
They share children River Rose and Remington Alexander. He is also father to two other children from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth.

According to the documents, Kelly thought Brandon overstepped his role when securing deals with The Voice, Norwegian Cruise Line, Wayfair, and the Billboard Music Awards, and they should have been conducted by Clarkson’s team at Creative Artists Agency. He took fees for his role.
‘Under the Talent Agencies Act (TAA), a manager, like any person without a talent agency license, cannot procure or attempt to procure employment for artists,’ the ruling read. The ruling is being appealed by Brandon’s legal team.
