A Gladiators audience member gave birth during one of the live shows, it’s been revealed.

The iconic programme is returning after more than two decades off our screens, with father-son duo Bradley and Barney Walsh as hosts.

A new generation of superhuman Gladiators will be following in the footsteps of the likes of Jet, Hunter and Wolf, but it seems there was more drama off the stage rather than on it.

Ahead of the revival airing, with Fury, Steel, Comet and Sabre making their debut in the new line-up, the presenting pair revealed one audience member’s waters broke while the show was being filmed.

‘One lady in the audience, her waters broke during filming. She gave birth there,’ Barney revealed.

The Chase star Bradley added, according to OK!: ‘That’s absolutely true, that actually did happen!’

The reboot of the 90s programme, which will see brave contenders compete against the Gladiators in tests of speed and strength, is launching on our screens this weekend, but was filmed last year in Sheffield, with fans queuing for hours to watch the live show.

After being announced as the new hosts, taking over from the likes of Ulrika Jonsson who presented the original series, Bradley, 62, and Barney, 26, revealed they shared a special link to the programme.

Donna Walsh, Barney’s mum and Bradley’s wife, was head choreographer for the Gladiator cheerleaders on the original series.

Bradley and a very young Barney were regular visitors on set, with Barney taking some of his first steps on the iconic arena floor.

Not to be outdone, Bradley followed in his small son’s footsteps when he took part in a celebrities vs jockeys special, in 1997.

Bradley had previously said: ‘Wow! I can’t believe that I’ve been asked to be part of this iconic show.

‘I used to sit backstage, or in the audience, every week watching my wife be part of this juggernaut and now I get to co-host a new version of GLADIATORS!!!

‘Saturday night family entertainment at its best…ARE YOU READY ?!’

Gladiators first hit our television screens in 1992 and was broadcast on ITV, lasting for eight seasons until 2000.

Gladiators begins on Saturday, January 13, at 5.50pm on BBC One.
