WWE superstar, 22, wins major championship in just fifth ever TV match-Alistair McGeorge-Entertainment – Metro

Rising WWE superstar Oba Femi has become the NXT North American Champion.

The 22-year-old star had wrestled four matches on official NXT television before winning the title from Dragon Lee on Tuesday night’s episode in a shocking moments to kick off the new year in style.

Having won the NXT Breakout Tournament last week, the Nigerian wrestler cashed in his title shot moments after Lee retained the gold against Lexi King.

Just one minute and 16 seconds later, and one of WWE’s brightest prospects is already holding gold just one week into 2024.

He made his official NXT TV debut at Spring Breakin’ in April last year, beating Oro Mensah, while last month he triumphed over Myles Borne and Tavion Heights in the Breakout Tournament before his win in the final.

His victory over Dragon Lee is just his 21st wrestling match in total, having been trained from the ground up by WWE at the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

As well as the occasional unseen bout on NXT Live house shows, Oba has also appeared on WWE Network streaming show NXT Level Up five times.

Having impressed in track and field, he signed to WWE in 2021 as part of the company’s Next In Line programme to turn collegiate athletes into wrestling superstars.

Oba made his official debut on an episode of Level Up in November 2022, losing to Dante Chen, but he has gone onto strike a chord with fans around the world who are excited to see his development.

Standing six foot three and weighing 19 and a half stone, viewers are expecting big things from the heavyweight as he continues to grow on screen.

‘Oba Femi is the future,’ predicted fan @RealMarkoutHK on X, while @ProjectChocobo added: ‘Oba Femi is 22. Jesus, the dude has such a future ahead of him.’

And @fanofcombat_ wrote: ‘Oba Femi instantly caught my the first time I saw him and wanted this for him for a while now , one of my absolute favorites, there’s a bright future ahead for him!’
