WWE superstar Carlito is preparing for his first Royal Rumble in years, and he’s in better shape than ever before.

The 44-year-old wrestling veteran – whose first worked for the company from 2004 to 2010 – made a sensational comeback to help Bad Bunny in May last year, before making his full-time return five months later.

Fans were immediately blown away by the former Intercontinental Champion’s physique, and he exclusively told Metro.co.uk how he has stayed motivated.

‘No, it hasn’t been as hard as people think,’ he insisted. ‘Just once you get in the mindset, I think you stick to it, and it’s everything’s kind of easy.’

Despite being born into the wrestling business – his father Carlos Colon is WWE Hall of Famer and a hero in their native Puerto Rico – Carlito admitted even he has days where he doesn’t want to work out.

‘At this point, you know, there’s a lot of stuff that I don’t want to do, but I don’t even think about it now,’ he shrugged.

‘Like when some people wake up, they don’t want to go to the gym – and I’m like that too. But I just, I don’t even think about it. I just, I know that a certain time, I just go, you know what I mean?’

The current SmackDown star insisted if people get over that initial barrier of simply going to the gym for their workout, they end up instantly feeling the benefits.

‘I would say everybody, about 90% of time, they’re glad they actually went after being in the gym,’ he said. ‘So I think people need to understand that that might be a little miserable before, but you always feel good after. So, just think about the afterthought.’

While social media was flooded with posts about Carlito’s epic transformation and calling on WWE to re-sign him – which they soon did – the man himself was simply overjoyed with the reaction he got live in Puerto Rico.

‘I didn’t expect the response that I got. But it just shows that they’ve been – a lot of people have been waiting for me [back] in a WWE ring for the longest time,’ he said. ‘And, you know, I greatly appreciate that.

‘And I was glad to see that people haven’t forgotten me, especially, you know, after all these years of being basically out of the spotlight. I mean, I didn’t really go anywhere besides Puerto Rico!

‘So, you know, it just meant a lot to me that people still remember.’

After being reintroduced alongside the Latino World Order, Carlito’s next goal is being in this year’s Royal Rumble and if he can’t win, he’d simple love to have a moment that stands the test of time.

‘Of course, winning is the best thing ever. But definitely doing something memorable… somehow I think that’s the second best thing you can do in the Rumble,’ he pondered. ‘Do something they’ll remember, that’ll go on for years.’

After a career going from winning the Intercontinental and US Titles in his first year on SmackDown to the special night at Backlash in Puerto Rico, and the latter is yet to really sink in as Carlito stays focused on the present.

‘I didn’t panic too much. Maybe once everything’s settled, I can look back,’ he said. ‘It hasn’t really settled in yet. I’m on my grind right now.

‘Hopefully, when all said and done, I can look back and be proud of the stuff I did.’

The WWE Royal Rumble airs January 27 at 1am. Tune in live via the WWE Network.
